Timeless Tunes, Ageless Crowd: Afrigo Band Brings Down the House at Friday Night Live

Who says legends are just for the old school? Last Friday night, Guvnor flipped the script as Afrigo Band and Sophie Nantongo served up a thrilling performance that got boomers, millennials, and Gen Zs all vibing under one roof!

Held on June 27th during the monthly Friday Night Live series, the show proved that good music knows no age limit. With the venue packed to capacity and I&M Bank Uganda stepping in as the new event sponsor, the night was set for fireworks and it delivered.

The warm-up came courtesy of Guvnor’s resident DJ, spinning a feel-good mix of Ugandan classics and Afrobeats, which had the dance floor buzzing before the live band even picked up their instruments.

Then, like clockwork at 11PM, the unmistakable magic of Afrigo Band filled the room. With classics like “Abaana b’Afrigo,” “Jim Wange,” and “Batuuse,” the crowd was instantly transported, but not into a dusty memory lane this was a loud, joyful celebration of Ugandan music done right.

“It felt like I was in my dad’s favorite cassette, but with Snapchat filters.” joked one Gen Z fan on X (formerly Twitter).

Just after midnight, the energy exploded when Hon. Rachael Magoola stepped up to the mic. Her performance of “Emaali” lit a fire under the crowd, and when she sang “Obangaina,” the club absolutely erupted everyone was on their feet.

But the night wasn’t done yet.

Enter Sophie Nantongo, whose smooth voice and heartfelt lyrics brought another wave of sing-alongs and couple slow-dances. Her hits “Nkwagala Nnyo” and “Love Super” turned Guvnor into a love fest, with fans waving hands and filming TikToks mid-harmony.

“Afrigo Band gave us nostalgia, Sophie gave us butterflies,” another fan posted.

Tshaka Mayanja, Marketing Lead at Guvnor, described the night as more than just entertainment:

“It’s not just music it’s Ugandan culture. These are the songs that shaped generations, and it’s amazing to see both old and young connecting to that magic.”
